Chart of the Day: “Explicit Support for Same-Sex Marriage by State and Age” (pdf) by Jeff Lax and Justin Phillips of the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. Created using data collected for a joint paper on gay rights.
Prof. Lax breaks it down:
Seven states cross the 50% mark overall as of our current estimates, but the generation gap is huge. If policy were set by state-by-state majorities of those 65 or older, none would allow same-sex marriage. If policy were set by those under 30, only 12 states would not allow-same-sex marriage.

Oh I love this, it says so much:
-The south (as usual) lags behind the rest of the country.
-Utah plants itself in the middle of all the southern states, demanding to be as backwards as they are.
-It’s good to know that as the older generation dies, more people will be given equal rights.
-My state (utah) is less tolerant than texas…(dear god)
-The two least educated states (alabama and mississippi) are the two least accepting of same sex unions,
-While #1 and #2 smartest states (vermont and massachusetts) have the highest explicit support for gay rights.
-It’s good to see that the decided trend (as the new generations take over) in this country is towards equality. We may be behind now, but let things continue and we will do better.
